The Last Battle of PVT Sidney I. Heistein.                Page 6.

At the base of the tower, looking Northeast. Mount Della Costa is visible. Hill 446 was denuded in 1943 and the 1st BN had a perfect view of enemy positions on Mount Della Costa and Roccaromana below. Unfortunately, the enemy had just as good a view and opened up with a vicious artillery barrage. Private Sidney I. Heistein and his entire squad were killed in this barrrage on 18 October 1943. Beyond Mt. Della Costa lies the bloody Winter Line. Company B remained in positions in the vicinity of Roccaromana until 27 October ending up at the Mignano Gap before being relieved in November after an almost unheard of 2 months in combat.
I am unable to pinpoint the exact spot on Hill 446 where Sidney and his squad fell. We chose to stop at the base of the Samnite Tower, where I read a traditional Jewish memorial service for cousin Sidney I. Heistein. It consisted of Psalms 15, 91 and 130 and "KEL MALEI RACHAMIM" the traditional Memorial Prayer.
Tony Cisneros printed the picture of Sidney (left) and his brother-in-law Charles Bernstein from my web site and gave me the flag. I carried a 3rd division patch throughout the trip.
Looking northeast toward Statigliano and the upper Volturno valley beyond.
Another path up the south side of Hill 446, photographed after descending from the hill.
We're now north of Hill 446 on the road to Roccaromana. We see the north face of Hill 446 where I believe Company B operated. Sidney was killed either on this side of the hill or on the east face which faces Roccaromana (to the right of the tower.) Company B did not attack Roccaromana, that job was left to company A.
