SUNDAY --
HELLO AND HOW ARE YOU --
WHEN I WORK SUNDAY NIGHT I MAKE THAT MY LETTER WRITING NIGHT -- AND JUST TO GIVE YOU AND IDEA, I WRITE ABOUT TWELVE LETTERS THAT NIGHT SO YOU CAN IMAGINE I'M A PRETTY BUSY MAN THEN. JUST YOU KEEP WRITING ME I DON'T CARE IF IT'S IN ENGLISH OR JEWISH -- I CAN READ BOTH, BUT I THINK FOR YOU IT WOULD BE BETTER TO WRITE ME IN ENGLISH, SINCE IT WILL GIVE YOU SOME PRACTICE.
I AM TAKING YOUR ADVICE AND FORGETTING ABOUT PROMOTIONS AND AM HAPPY TO BE STILL IN THIS COUNTRY -- THOUGH WITH THE WORK I DO I WILL BE SAFE NO MATTER WHERE I GO. ABOUT A PROMOTION I HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED FOR A CORPORAL -- AND IF THE MATTER IS ACCEPTED I WILL GET A PROMOTION ONE OF THESE DAYS --SO I'LL JUST SIT AND WAIT UNTIL IT HAPPENS.
DAVIE WROTE AND TOLD ABOUT HERBIE'S BABY AND FROM THE SOUND OF THINGS IT LOOKS LIKE HERBIE DID A GOOD JOB SO MAYBE ONE OF THESE DAYS THINGS WILL BECOME NORMAL AGAIN AND I'LL HAVE THE GOOD LUCK OF PAYING HIM A VISIT AND SEE WHAT HIS CHARMING DAUGHTER LOOKS LIKE.

MOM HAD A PRETTY BAD COLD BUT THANK GOD SHE'S QUITE BETTER NOW -- WITH COLDS GOING AROUND THE WAY THEY DO -- EVERYBODY SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL -- AND YOU TOO SHOULDN'T BE RUNNING AROUND TOO MUCH -- THEY EXAMINE US ABOUT ONCE A WEEK TO KEEP COLDS FROM SPREADING HERE -- THAT'S ONE THING ABOUT THE ARMY, THEY ARE NOT STINGY WHEN IT COMES TO DOCTORS AND I LIKE THAT VERY MUCH SINCE IT HELPS TO KEEP SICKNESS FROM SPREADING. WE HAD SOME COLD WEATHER OUT HERE, THE PAST WEEK BUT YESTERDAY IT CHANGED A LITTLE AND IT IS NOT QUITE AS COLD AS IT WAS.
BOY I DID ALL RIGHT IN THE MAIL TODAY -- MOM SEND ME SOME HOMEMADE CANDY THAT SHE MADE AND ALSO A NICE [piece of] SALAMI -- WHICH GOES GOOD WHEN I WORK NIGHTS -- YOU KNOW WHEN IT COMES TO THAT GOOD OLD JEWISH DELICATESSEN YOU CAN'T FIND IT IN THE SOUTH -- SO EVERY NOW AND THEN MOM GIVES A TREAT AND SENDS A PIECE OF SALAMI -- BELIEVE ME SHE DOES MORE FOR MORALE WITH THAT CANDY AND SALAMI THAN ANYTHING I CAN THINK OF -- YEP SHE'S A GOOD KID -- THERE'S NO GETTING AWAY FROM THAT.
THERE ISN'T MUCH CHANGE HERE -- FROM DAY TO DAY THINGS ARE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME -- WE GO ON WITH OUR WORK WHICH THANK GOD ISN'T LIKE AN ARMY LIFE -- AND SPEND TIME OFF GOING TO TOWN OR WHATEVER SOCIAL ACTIVITIES THERE ARE TO AMUSE US. IT'S A LAZY LIFE AND WE DON'T OVERWORK LIKE SOME OF THE OTHER BRANCHES OF THE ARMY -- I DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN NOR DO I WORRY IF I SHOULD BE SENT OVERSEAS BECAUSE THANK GOD WE WEREN'T TRAINED AS FIGHTERS -- SO WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT.
I HAVE A FEW FRIENDS OVERSEAS ALREADY AND THEY WRITE BACK SOME INTERESTING LETTERS -- ONE OF THEM WAS PROMOTED TO SERGEANT AND WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE BATTLEFIELD SO HE COULD WRITE STORIES FOR THE COMPANY PAPER WHICH I THINK IS A LUCKY BREAK FOR HIM. SO THERE [worrying] DOESN'T PAY AT ALL.
I HOPE EVERYBODY IS FEELING WELL AND TAKING GOOD CARE OF THEMSELVES DURING THIS COLD WEATHER AND NOW I'LL HAVE TO SAY SO LONG ON ACCOUNT OF I HAVE A NUMBER OF OTHER LETTERS TO WRITE -- AND I PROMISED MYSELF THAT I WOULD WRITE AUNT JENNY A JEWISH LETTER -- AND THAT'S GONNA TAKE A LITTLE TIME -- SO [goodbye and be well and strong] ALL OF YOU -- AND I'LL BE WAITING TO HEAR FROM YOU --
Phil
